History of Kappa Sigma

On December 10, 1869, five students at the

University of Virginia met in 46 East Lawn and

founded the Kappa Sigma Fraternity in America.

William Grigsby McCormick, George Miles

Arnold, Edmund Law Rogers, Frank Courtney

Nicodemus, and John Covert Boyd later become

known as the Five Friends and Brothers. They

took the traditions of the ancient order in Bologna

and created a fraternity that aimed to continue in

its noble cause, that of unending brotherhood.

These founders

created a

fraternity based

on traditions of

the past and dedicated to the persuit of new

learning. The new brothers recorded their bond in

a constitution and oath that set forth the ideals

and principles to all future Kappa Sigmas today.

Over the next one-hundred years, Kappa Sigma

grew to over 150 chapters, continuing the legacy

that was started on that cold December day.

The orgins of Kappa Sigma can be traced back

to Bologna, Italy around the year 1400. Here, at

the University of Bologna, a teacher named

Manual Chrysoloras formed an ancient secret

society with five of his most devoted students.

The society was to provide protection

from the tyrrant governor

Baldassarre Cossa, who would often

send his men to attack and rob

students at the University.

Kappa Sigma was founded at Kutztown University

on December 2, 2006, after being colonized a

year prior. Kappa Sigma came to Kutztown

in the fall of 2005 and contacted then junior

Colin Lewis because he was involved with many

organizations on campus. Throughout the

next few months, Colin gathered men he

knew would be dedicated and willing to

put in the hard work of becoming a chapter.

With time, the colony grew in both size and

respect within the University as well

as the community. When finally installed in

December, Kappa Sigma at Kutztown became the

Omicron- Omicron chapter and emerged as the largest

social fraternity on campus, with close to

fifty Founding Father members.
